QR Code Scam Surge and How to Stay Secure

A recent report by Palo Alto Networks shows a surge in QR code scan scams in India, with Bengaluru alone reporting approximately 21,000 cases between 2017 and May 31, 2023. This trend is alarming and accounts for 41 percent of incidents related to QR codes, malicious links, or debit/credit card fraud.

In QR Code scam, Attackers exploit the visual similarity of QR codes, replacing legitimate ones with the malicious codes. This deceptive tactic poses a significant challenge in distinguishing between genuine and fraudulent codes. Victims unknowingly scan these malicious QR codes, leading to phishing websites or malware installation with the intention of stealing personal and financial information.

Attack Method:

  1. Creation of Malicious QR Codes: Scammers craft QR codes resembling those from reputable sources, distributing them in public spaces or sending them via email or text.

  2. Victims Scanning QR Codes: Unsuspecting victims scan the malicious QR codes, redirecting them to phishing websites or prompting malware downloads.

  3. Information Theft or Device Takeover: Scammers exploit stolen information for malicious purposes, gaining control over the victim's device remotely.

This scam can compromise personal and financial information of victims who may inadvertently provide sensitive data on phishing websites, and downloaded malware can grant attackers unauthorized access to their devices.

Recommendations:

  1. Exercise Caution in Public Spaces:

  • Avoid scanning QR codes in public places, particularly those not from trusted sources.

  1. Use QR Code Scanner Apps:

  • Before scanning, employ a QR code scanner app displaying the destination URL. If suspicious or inconsistent, refrain from scanning.

  1. Download Apps from Official Stores:

  • Only download apps from official stores like Google Play or Apple's App Store. Avoid downloading from QR codes or unfamiliar websites.

  1. Install Security Software:

  • Install and update security software regularly to protect against malware, ensuring it remains current with the latest definitions.

  1. Phishing Awareness:

  • Be vigilant for signs of phishing scams, such as unsolicited requests for personal or financial information. Refrain from clicking on untrusted links or entering information on dubious websites.

Implementing these recommendations can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to QR code scan scams, reinforcing digital security in the face of this growing cyber threat.
