OTP Fraud: How to Stay Safe Online

Some fraudsters are pretending to be Delhi Police officers and calling people to trick them into sharing their OTPs and bank details. They claim that the victims’ bank accounts have been hacked and they need to verify their identity and secure their money. The scammers then use the OTPs and bank details to steal money from the victims’ accounts. This is a type of phishing attack that exploits people’s trust and fear.

Security Impact

The security impact of OTP fraud is that fraudsters can access the victims’ personal and financial information, such as bank accounts, social media platforms, or online services. This can lead to identity theft, financial loss, digital scams, or harassment. OTP fraud can also undermine the security of two-factor authentication, which is supposed to protect users from credential theft. To prevent OTP fraud, users should not share their OTPs with anyone, even if they claim to be from a legitimate organization. They should also report any suspicious calls or messages to the authorities and monitor their accounts for any unauthorized transactions

Recommendation

Some recommendations for preventing OTP fraud are:

  • Do not share your OTP with anyone, even if they claim to be from a legitimate organization or a friend or family member.

  • Do not click on any links or attachments in unsolicited emails or messages that ask for your OTP or other personal or financial information.

  • Do not call back any unknown numbers that claim to be from your bank or other service providers and ask for your OTP or other verification codes.

  • Report any suspicious calls or messages to the authorities and your service providers as soon as possible.

  • Monitor your bank statements and online accounts regularly and alert your service providers if you notice any unauthorized transactions or activities.

  • Change your passwords and PINs frequently and use strong and unique passwords for each account.

  • Use a trusted and updated antivirus software on your devices and avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for online transactions.
