Aadhar Data breach

There was a recent data breach of Aadhar cards. According to a report by Resecurity, a US-based cybersecurity company, on October 9, 2023, a threat actor going by the alias ‘pwn0001’ posted a thread on ‘Breach Forums’, brokering access to 815 million (81.5 crore) Indian Citizen Aadhaar & Passport records. However, according to independent cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia, there might be data of a few lakh people compromised, and no evidence shows that the data of 81.5 crore people leaked.

The hacker claims to have extracted the information from the Covid-19 test details of the citizens registered with ICMR.

Security Impact

The data breach of Aadhaar cards is a serious issue that can have far-reaching consequences. The leaked data includes names, phone numbers, addresses, Aadhaar, and passport information of 815 million (81.5 crore) Indian citizens. This information can be used for identity theft, financial fraud, and other malicious activities. The breach has raised concerns about the privacy of Indian citizens and the security of their personal information.
